# AI visibility (share of voice in AI answers)

> AI visibility measures how often AI assistants mention or cite your business when answering the questions your buyers ask, compared with competitors over the same set of prompts.

## How it works

There is no single official number. You track AI visibility by running a fixed list of buyer prompts through the assistants that matter to you (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, Google AI Mode) and recording for each answer:

- Whether your business is mentioned.
- Whether one of your pages is cited as a source, and which one.
- Which competitors appear instead.
- How the answer describes you, including errors.

Answers vary from run to run and by location, so a single check means little. Run each prompt several times on a schedule and read the trend.

Platform data is starting to fill in. Google Search Console has a generative AI performance report with impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode ([Google](https://developers.google.com/search/blog/2026/06/gen-ai-performance-reports)). Bing Webmaster Tools has an AI Performance dashboard with citation counts and the grounding queries behind them ([Microsoft](https://about.ads.microsoft.com/en/blog/post/march-2026/the-ai-performance-dashboard-your-view-into-where-your-brand-appears-across-the-ai-web)).

## How businesses use it

AI visibility is the reporting layer for [GEO](https://methodcrew.com/glossary/generative-engine-optimization). A useful monthly report covers 30 to 100 prompts grouped by buying stage, shows your share of answers against named competitors, and lists the pages that earned citations. In our [SEO and GEO retainers](https://methodcrew.com/services/seo-geo-retainers) ($3,000 to $8,000 a month) it sits next to rankings and organic leads in one report.

The description matters as much as the count. If assistants say you serve enterprises when you sell to 50-person companies, fix the pages and profiles that taught them that.

## Where it goes wrong

The usual mistake is treating a third-party score as fact. Tracking tools sample prompts and engines in their own way, and Google warns against tools that claim access to internal Google metrics. Use them for trends and write down your method so month-on-month numbers compare.

Two more traps: prompts that already include your brand name, which inflate results, and visibility reports that never ask whether those answers lead to inquiries. Track AI referrals in analytics too, such as visits from chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai.

If you sell mainly through referrals and RFPs, a small prompt set checked once a quarter is enough.

## Example (hypothetical)

Hypothetical: a logistics software company tracks 60 prompts such as "best route planning software for regional distributors" across 4 assistants each month. It is mentioned in 9 of the 60 at the start, and the report shows which competitor pages get cited instead, which sets the content plan for the next quarter.
