# Answer engine optimization (AEO)

> Answer engine optimization structures pages so a search engine or AI assistant can lift a direct answer from them, as a featured snippet, voice answer or AI citation.

## How it works

AEO predates the current AI tools. It started with featured snippets and voice assistants, where one answer wins and the rest are invisible. The method has barely changed: find the questions buyers ask, then answer each one directly on a page that deserves to rank.

On the page that means:

- A question as the heading, worded the way people ask it.
- A 40 to 60 word answer directly under it that makes sense on its own.
- Detail, tables and sources after the answer, for readers who want more.
- Facts a machine can check, such as price, duration and what is included, in visible text.

AEO and [GEO](https://methodcrew.com/glossary/generative-engine-optimization) overlap heavily. AEO is about the shape of the answer on your page; GEO is about whether AI systems retrieve and cite the page at all. Most programs need both.

## How businesses use it

For a service business, the questions with buying intent are narrow: what it costs, how long it takes, whether it fits a company your size, and how it compares with the alternative. Pages that answer those plainly get quoted.

Each Method Crew service page opens with a short answer block for this reason. Our [answer engine optimization](https://methodcrew.com/services/answer-engine-optimization) sprint ($6,000 to $15,000) rewrites a client's key pages the same way and adds the questions they are missing.

## Where it goes wrong

Many sites bolt on a FAQ of 30 vague questions to chase rich results. Google stopped showing FAQ rich results on May 7, 2026 ([Google documentation](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/structured-data/faqpage)), and padded FAQs mostly repeat the body. Keep FAQs for real questions the page does not already answer.

The second mistake is the hedged answer. "It depends on many factors" gives an engine nothing to quote. Give the range and say what moves it.

AEO also cannot rescue a page that is not indexed or ranks nowhere. Check that before rewriting anything.

## Example (hypothetical)

Hypothetical: a dental group's page on clear aligner costs buries the price in paragraph 6. Moving a two-sentence answer with the price range and treatment length to the top, under the heading "How much do clear aligners cost at our clinics?", gives search engines and AI assistants a passage they can quote as written.
