Google AI Overviews and AI Mode
Definition
AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries shown at the top of some Google results with links to sources; AI Mode is a conversational search view built on the same systems.
Updated
Also called Search Generative Experience (SGE).
How it works
Google launched AI Overviews in the US in May 2024, after testing it as the Search Generative Experience, and opened AI Mode to US users in May 2025. Both answer a query with generated text plus links to the pages behind it. Google describes a query fan-out technique: the model runs several related searches across subtopics, then picks supporting pages while it writes the response (Google: AI features and your website (opens in a new tab)).
The sources come from the normal Google index. Google's own documentation sets out its position:
- There are no extra requirements to appear beyond being indexed and eligible to show a snippet.
- You do not need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema markup.
- The generative features rest on the same core ranking and quality systems as regular Search (AI optimization guide (opens in a new tab)).
How businesses use it
There is no opt-in and no separate ranking to buy. What you can do is publish pages that deserve to be the cited source: direct answers, clear headings, original facts and first-hand detail.
Then measure. Clicks and impressions from AI features are counted in the Search Console Performance report under the Web search type. Since August 31, 2026, every site also has a generative AI performance report showing impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, device and date (Google announcement (opens in a new tab)).
Where it goes wrong
The first mistake is buying an "AI Overviews optimization" package built on special files or markup that Google says it does not need. The second is limiting snippets by accident. The nosnippet, data-nosnippet and max-snippet controls restrict what Google can show, including in AI features, so use them only on purpose.
Plan for some lost clicks. Simple informational queries are often answered on the results page, so traffic to basic explainer pages can fall even when rankings hold. Track leads from organic search alongside rankings, and put more effort into pages for buying questions, where people still click through to compare.
