In short

Answer engine optimization (AEO) restructures the pages your buyers ask about so Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT and Perplexity can quote them accurately. A sprint covers 10 to 25 pages: question research, answer-first rewrites, schema that matches the visible text and a tracked panel of 30 to 50 buyer prompts. It takes 4 to 7 weeks and costs $6,000 to $15,000.

Updated

Who it is for

  • Companies whose technical SEO is sound but whose pages bury the answer
  • Service firms where 10 to 25 pages decide most deals
  • Teams willing to publish prices, timelines and limits
  • Marketing leads who need a before-and-after view of AI answers

Signals you need it

  • AI answers describe you wrongly

ChatGPT or Perplexity quote an old price, a service you dropped or a competitor's feature as yours. The engine filled the gap with whatever it could find.

  • Your best pages open with a slogan

The answer to the buyer's question sits in the fourth paragraph, under a heading like Our approach. Engines retrieve passages, and that passage says nothing.

  • Prices hide behind a contact form

Buyers ask AI tools what things cost. If your page has no figure, the answer quotes a competitor or a directory that guessed.

What we hand over

Everything here is yours: the code, the content, the tracking and the accounts it all runs on.

Question map
Every buyer question assigned to the one page that should answer it, built from Search Console queries, Bing grounding queries, AlsoAsked and your sales call notes.
10 to 25 rewritten pages
Each opens with a 40 to 60 word answer, uses question headings, states prices and limits and cites its sources.
Comparison and pricing blocks
HTML tables comparing your offer with the main alternatives, including in-house and doing nothing.
Schema pack
Service, BreadcrumbList and Organization JSON-LD for every page in scope, validated and checked line by line against the visible copy.
Prompt tracker
A shared sheet of 30 to 50 buyer prompts with baseline and end-of-sprint runs across 6 engines: named or not, linked or not, which URL, and whether the description was accurate.

How the engagement runs

Typical timeline
4 to 7 weeks
  1. Stage 11 week

    Map

We build the question map, run the baseline prompt panel and choose the 10 to 25 pages that carry the most buying intent. We also check crawler access and snippet settings, because a rewrite on a blocked page changes nothing.

  2. Stage 21 to 2 weeks

    Prove

We rewrite 3 pages first, take them through your approver, publish and request indexing. You see the format on your own site, and we settle the review routine before the larger batch.

  3. Stage 32 to 4 weeks

    Build

The remaining pages, comparison tables and schema, shipped in weekly batches with a demo each Friday. The sprint closes with a second prompt panel run and a short report comparing it with the baseline.

  4. Stage 4Monthly, optional

    Run

A monthly panel run, new pages for questions that appear in grounding queries and fixes when an engine quotes something stale. It sits inside an SEO and GEO retainer, or your team takes the tracker in-house.

What is answer engine optimization, and how does it differ from GEO?

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is page-level work. We rewrite and restructure the pages your buyers ask about so an AI answer can quote them accurately. Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Copilot all assemble answers from passages they retrieve. AEO makes sure the right passage exists, on the right page, in a form that still makes sense when it is lifted out of context.

Generative engine optimization is the wider program around it: crawler access, technical SEO, how your company is described across the web, and measurement across the whole site. If those are broken, AEO rewrites sit on pages nobody retrieves. That is why the first thing we ask about is the technical state of the site, and why a site with rendering or indexing problems should start with an audit.

The labels matter less in practice than vendors suggest. Both disciplines depend on the same indexes and ranking systems, and both reward pages that are specific. Our article on GEO vs AEO vs SEO goes through where the work overlaps.

For buying purposes, the split is simple. GEO is the program that keeps a site reachable and consistent. AEO is the sprint that changes what your most important pages say. After the sprint, a monthly prompt panel shows when an engine starts quoting something out of date.

  • A person decides

How do you get a page into Google AI Overviews and AI Mode?

By being the clearest indexed answer to the question, with nothing in the way. Google's AI features documentation (opens in a new tab) is direct: "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode." A page has to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet. No special schema, AI text file or markdown version is needed.

Within those rules, 4 things are worth doing.

  1. Remove snippet restrictions. nosnippet, data-nosnippet on key passages or a low max-snippet value limit how your text can appear in AI Overviews. Old SEO plugins sometimes set them by default.
  2. Answer the sub-questions. Google's AI optimization guide (opens in a new tab) describes query fan-out: the model runs related searches across subtopics. A buyer asking about invoice automation sets off searches about cost, accuracy and accounting integrations. A page that answers those in clear sections has more ways to be retrieved.
  3. Cover narrow questions, even where you do not rank first. Ahrefs data reported by Search Engine Journal in March 2026 (opens in a new tab) showed that 38% of pages cited in AI Overviews ranked in the top 10 for the same query. Pages further down get cited when they answer a narrow question well.
  4. Keep one strong page per topic. Google's guide warns against creating separate content for every variation to manipulate generative AI responses. A set of 20 near-identical pages for 20 phrasings is a liability.

The same pages then serve ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot, which reward the same plain, specific writing.

What changes on a page during an AEO sprint?

Mostly the writing. The table shows a typical service page before and after. The example is illustrative; each row is a standard part of the sprint.

ElementBeforeAfter
H1A slogan such as Smarter operations, fasterThe service in buyer words: Invoice processing automation for finance teams
First paragraphCompany historyA 40 to 60 word answer: what it is, who it suits, how long, what it costs
HeadingsLabels such as Our approachQuestions buyers ask: How long does setup take?
PriceContact usA range, with what moves it

SchemaPlugin defaults that contradict the pageService and BreadcrumbList JSON-LD that matches the visible text

These edits follow the strongest results in the GEO research paper (opens in a new tab) by Aggarwal and colleagues (KDD 2024). Adding quotations, statistics and cited sources raised visibility in their benchmark, and keyword stuffing lowered it. It is a lab benchmark, so we treat it as a direction to work in and make no forecast from it.

We also move every fact into HTML text. A price inside a PDF or an image is much harder for an answer engine to read and quote than the same price in a sentence.

What does an AEO sprint cost?

$6,000 to $15,000, fixed price, for 10 to 25 pages over 4 to 7 weeks.

Four things move it within that band:

  • Page count and depth. Ten service pages with usable copy sit near $6,000. Twenty-five pages that each need a comparison table and a new pricing section sit near the top.
  • Research load. If your sales team can share call notes or the questions buyers ask in the first meeting, the question map is quick. Built from Search Console, AlsoAsked and competitor pages alone, it takes longer.
  • Facts we have to chase. Prices, timelines and limits are exactly what engines quote, and getting them approved inside a company is often the slowest step. We price for the review rounds you expect.
  • Who publishes. We can edit directly in your CMS, or hand over finished copy and JSON-LD for your team to ship.

The prompt panel is included: 30 to 50 buyer prompts, run at the start and end of the sprint in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Mode, Copilot and Claude. Running it every month afterward belongs in an SEO and GEO retainer at $3,000 to $8,000 a month.

Tool and model usage is billed at cost with no markup. The question map and tracker live in your accounts and stay with you.

When is AEO the wrong place to start?

When the pages you want rewritten are not being crawled, rendered or indexed. AEO edits sit on top of technical SEO and cannot repair it. If your copy loads through client-side JavaScript, your robots.txt blocks OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot, or half your service pages are missing from Google's index, start with the SEO and GEO audit. It costs less than a sprint and decides whether a sprint is worth buying yet.

AEO is also the wrong spend in 3 cases:

  • You have fewer than about 8 pages worth quoting. A small site needs the pages written first, which is a copywriting or site project.
  • Nobody will approve a number. Engines quote specifics. If legal or sales will not sign off a single price range or timeline, the rewrites will be weaker than what you are paying for.
  • You want hundreds of new pages. A sprint rewrites pages buyers already need. For a regular publishing pipeline with editors approving each piece, look at content operations.

Not included: link building, paid placement in AI tools, posting on review sites or forums on your behalf, and anything meant to trick a model, such as hidden text or instructions aimed at crawlers. Those tactics break Google's and Bing's guidelines, and the risk outlasts any short gain. We also do not sell general digital marketing.

What changes for your team

  • Each priority page opens with an answer an engine can quote without editing it.
  • Prices, timelines and comparisons sit in HTML text, out of PDFs, images and contact forms.
  • Structured data on every page in scope validates and matches what a visitor reads.
  • You know which of 30 to 50 buyer prompts name you, before and after the sprint.

Common questions

If your question is not here, email the team. We reply within 1 working day.

Do I need special code or files to appear in AI answers?

No. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode need no special schema, AI text files or markdown; a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet. We add llms.txt and structured data where they are cheap and accurate, but they are housekeeping. The writing on the page is what gets quoted.

How do you track brand mentions in ChatGPT and Perplexity?

With a fixed prompt panel. We write 30 to 50 prompts your buyers would type, run each one in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Mode, Copilot and Claude, and log whether you are named, whether you are linked, which URL is cited and whether the description is right. Answers vary between runs, so we read the panel as a trend. Bing Webmaster Tools adds real citation counts for Microsoft's answers.

Does AEO replace traditional SEO?

No. Answer engines retrieve from search indexes, so a page that is not crawled, indexed and reasonably ranked has little chance of being quoted. AEO changes how pages are written and structured. SEO keeps them reachable and competitive. We run them together, and when budget is tight the audit decides which one gets the money first.

How soon do AI answers reflect the rewrites?

It varies by engine, and nobody outside those companies controls the pace. Google has to recrawl and reprocess each page, which can take days for well-linked pages and longer for deep ones. We request indexing in Search Console, submit changed URLs to Bing through IndexNow and rerun the prompt panel at the end of the sprint. A clear picture usually takes 2 or 3 monthly panel runs.

Which pages should we optimize first?

The ones closest to a buying decision: service pages, pricing, comparisons with alternatives and the pages your sales team sends after a first call. Next come pages that answer questions showing up in your Search Console queries or Bing grounding queries. Blog posts usually come last, unless one already earns links or AI citations. The question map in week 1 ranks them for you.

Will rewriting pages for AI answers hurt our Google rankings?

Not when the rewrite makes a page clearer and more specific. Answer-first openings, question headings, real prices and sourced facts are good practice for Google and for AI answers alike. The risk comes from stuffing keywords or splitting one topic into many thin pages, and we do neither. We keep URLs stable. If one has to change, we add a permanent redirect and update internal links.

What do you need from our team during the sprint?

About 6 to 10 hours across the sprint from one person who can approve facts such as prices, timelines and what you do not do. Sales call notes or recordings make the question map much better. We also need CMS access or a developer who can publish, plus access to Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
