Generative engine optimization (GEO)
Definition
Generative engine optimization is the work of making your pages likely to be retrieved, quoted and cited in AI-generated answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews.
Updated
Also called LLM optimization (LLMO).
How it works
The term comes from a 2023 research paper by Aggarwal and colleagues, published at KDD 2024 (arXiv 2311.09735 (opens in a new tab)). In their benchmark, adding quotations, statistics and source citations to a page raised its visibility in generated answers by up to 40%, while keyword stuffing lowered it. Treat those figures as directional. The tests predate the engines people use today.
Most AI answer engines share the same core. The model turns a question into several searches, retrieves pages from a search index, and writes an answer that cites some of them. So GEO starts as SEO: your pages have to be crawlable, indexed and ranking for the sub-questions a buyer's query breaks into. Google says its generative features are rooted in its core Search ranking and quality systems (AI optimization guide (opens in a new tab)).
How businesses use it
GEO adds a layer on top of SEO that decides whether your page is the one quoted:
- A one-sentence definition or direct answer at the top of each section.
- Specific, checkable claims: prices, durations, named tools, sourced figures.
- Consistent entity details across your site and profiles.
- AI search crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot and PerplexityBot allowed in robots.txt.
- Citations tracked over time as AI visibility.
Our SEO and GEO audits run $3,500 to $8,000 and cover both layers. For how the labels overlap, read GEO vs AEO vs SEO.
Where it goes wrong
Some vendors sell GEO as a separate discipline with its own tricks. Most of those tricks are plain SEO with a new label, or tactics search engines treat as spam: mass pages for every query variant, or hidden instructions aimed at AI models. Google's guide also says that chasing inauthentic mentions across the web is less helpful than it looks.
GEO is the wrong spend while your site has basic indexing problems or no pages that answer buyer questions. Fix those first.
